Introduction

What is Academic Advising?
Under the new 4-year degree structure, Academic Advising is provided to all students registered in the degree programs in PolyU. Students will be required to see their respective Academic Advisor at least once each academic year.

Academic Advising is a process of giving students guidance, support and encouragement and it helps students diminish the confusion that comes with a new environment, clarify their goals and get the most out of their education. (Houland, Anderson, Noel-Levitz, McGuire, & Crockett, 1997)

In PolyU and within SHTM, it means giving proper advice to students to ensure that they are studying on the right track. Academic Advising will be provided to students upon their entry into a degree program and up until they finish their study and graduate.

Whenever a student needs advice or answers with respect to his/her study or have questions about the program he/she is studying, or any other non-academic issues which may have a bearing on their academic study, he/she should approach his/her Academic Advisor immediately. Remember, "procrastination is the thief of time". If you procrastinate, you may run into more difficulties or problems later or they may complicate so much that you end up failing a subject. This will be last thing you want in your study. So, do not hesitate, talk to your Academic Advisor or your Undergraduate Secretary, if you cannot find your Academic Advisor.

What about Academic Advising within SHTM?
